Under-the-Radar Finery in the Foothills
Wines that boast the very best of their region with the quality and pedigree worthy of a 100-point winemaker are few and far between, but the 2017 Andis Painted Fields Red Blend is one of them. For a second, forget the remarkable $25 price tag. This is the poster child of a California region making its way into the history books, and the work of one of the top winemaking duos in the New World. Massive doesn’t begin to describe it—not unless you add profound, artful, and an incredible value.
A heritage blend of old-vine Barbera, Primitivo, Petite Sirah, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2017 Painted Fields puts the distinct regionality—a prerequisite for any world-class wine—of the Sierra Foothills on full display. The mouthwatering acidity and freshness derived from high-elevation plantings lends a high-toned edge to the deep concentration and mountainous complexity that come from abundant sunshine and rocky, granitic soils.
And talk about a master’s touch… Philippe Melka and Maayan Koschitzky are legends in Napa Valley, where there isn’t much they haven’t accomplished. Melka’s list of heavyweight clients includes Quintessa, Vineyard 29, Dana Estates, and Seavy, while Koschitzky is an alum of Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle. With the New World as their oyster, they’ve joined a cadre of superstars—Andy Erickson, Annie Favia, Helen Keplinger—in tapping the greatness of the Sierra Foothills.
Working with Andis owner Andrew Friedlander, Melka and Koschitzky increased freshness, complexity, and precision in the wines by using new equipment, improving winemaking protocols, and making farming adjustments that drove up acidity and kept sugars and ripeness in check. They let the ancient vines do the heavy lifting, and kept the juice pure and clean through to the end.
The 2017 Painted Fields Red Blend reflects the incredible essence of Amador County, as well as the hard work and artistry of two geniuses at the top of their craft. It is much more than a bargain—although it is unquestionably that as well. Offering up wild floral aromatics, fine Asian spice, and mountains of chocolate-covered dark fruit, this wine does wonders in defining one of California’s hottest regions.
