We Love A Good Paperwork Error...

The Premiere Napa Valley (PNV) auction can feel like a game of chess, with restaurants, retailers, and collectors all vying to secure the best deals possible. But in the end, very few go home with the limited-edition bottlings made exclusively for this event—and fewer still are privy to the backroom deals that take place in private cellars away from the crowds.

The smart money is on those small, invitation-only gatherings—and that’s where we unlocked this full-bodied, absolutely killer 2017 Bishop’s Capture Cabernet Sauvignon.

We’ve offered this luscious Cabernet just once before, and Wine Access members were absolutely smitten with it: They gave it a resounding 4.3-out-of-5 rating, which puts it alongside some of our most popular Cabernets—and when you pour yourself a glass, you’ll understand why..

We first tasted the 2017 Bishop’s Capture over a dry-aged New York strip at downtown Napa’s TORC, and the Cab just got better and better over the course of the evening. That’s where the winemaker told us the tale of his orphan wine:

This limited-edition bottling was a special lot from his highly decorated winery, destined for Premiere Napa Valley. But thanks to a missed application deadline, it wasn’t eligible. That left him with wine made from the same ultra-high quality grapes that go into the winery’s flagship ($200+) bottles, but they needed to offload it to shore up their books. So they put it under the Bishop’s Capture name—and then called us.

When it results in deals like this one, we’re happy to let the out-of-towners duke it out while we play the high-stakes but lower-profile insider game. There’s no thrill quite like taking this Bishop’s Capture—and we know you’ll agree.
