The Rewards of a Dramatic Rioja Season

The 2017 vintage in Rioja was an edge-of-your-seater.

An early frost slashed yields and had farmers gnawing their nails from the start. Already sweating their bottom line with fewer grapes on the vine, the locals—who traditionally go unaided by irrigation—now faced an unusually dry and warm spring and summer.

As the drought took its toll on the vines, further reducing yields, everyone knew continued heat could spell doom. But a late stretch of temperate weather swooped in at just the right time. The perfect finish allowed Bodegas Tobía to harvest gorgeous, small berries with thick skins.

Crafted from concentrated grapes of unusual power and intensity, Bodegas Tobía’s 92-point Selección de Autor perfectly captures the breathtaking 2017 vintage. It’s got delectably bold fruit, plush tannins, and outrageous overall quality—in fact, moments after trying it, our Master Sommelier, Sur Lucero, declared: “The quality-to-price ratio on this wine is insane. I’m stocking up.”

Bodegas Tobía is a new winery by the standards of Rioja—it was founded in 2004—and they fuse a forward-thinking personality with a historical mindset. Owner Óscar Tobía is following in the footsteps of his winemaker grandparents, and he’s dreamed about owning his own winery and restoring the family name ever since entering enology school.

The 2017 Tobía Selección has a classic mixture of Tempranillo, Graciano, and Garnacha. The grapes undergo a three-day cold maceration, then the juice is put into temperature-controlled “smart fermenters.” The wine ages 18 months in American and French oak then gets bottled unfiltered.

Polished by a few years in the cellar, it’s now ready for your table, so stock up and make sure that you have enough to drink for another five more years or more.
