Steven Spurrier, We Salute You!
Sparkling-wine producers the world over have been chasing Champagne’s coattails for centuries. While they can replicate the Champagne méthode, they historically couldn’t capture the magical terroir that makes the wines grown there so inimitable.
Enter the late Judgment of Paris mastermind Steven Spurrier, the man behind Bride Valley. If ever there were one person in the wine world capable of taking on the French at their own game, he was the man—a world-renowned critic who helped usher Napa Valley wines into their rightful place alongside the best of France.
And just as he was wise to challenge the French with Cabernet and Chardonnay grown in other regions, he set his sights on one of the few places on the globe that shares some of Champagne’s greatest virtues.
Across the English Channel from Champagne, located barely above the 50th parallel on the UK’s Jurassic Coast, is Dorset, England. Just 90 miles north of Reims in Champagne, this region boasts the same cool climate as Champagne. And since the glacial and unfathomable movements of geology know no political boundaries, this region—while located in a different country—is marked by the same chalky, fossil-rich soils you find in Champagne.
Spurrier’s groundbreaking Champagne-style sparkler is going to put a whole new country on your wine map. The Bride Valley Brut Reserve rode their 96 point score into Wine Enthusiast’s top 5 sparkling wines of the 2017 vintage. Join us in drinking a toast to Mr. Spurrier, and check out this video of his visit with us back in 2020!
