This Barolo Ticks All the Boxes

Many Barolos are for collectors—but the 2017 Cesare is for Barolo LOVERS.

This wine, grown in the prestigious Piemontese village of La Morra, is tailor-made for those with an affinity for Nebbiolo’s bewitching flavors plus a desire to enjoy a great bottle, right now, without having to delay satisfaction for 15 years. Already elegant, multidimensional, and seductive, it’s absolutely everything you want in savory, mouthwatering Barolo, but without the wait.

Cesare is the leadoff hitter in the Barolo lineup from Stroppiana winery in La Morra. (In case you’re wondering, the wine is not related to Pio Cesare in any way.) This Cesare is made by the brother and sister team of Leonardo and Altea Stroppiana, who in 2017 formally took the reins at the family winery from their parents, Dario and Stefania. Leonardo handles winemaking, and Altea is the family viticulturist, and she’s vigilant about green harvesting—lowering yields by reducing the number of bunches on the vine—a practice utterly critical to ensuring the late-ripening Nebbiolo grape achieves full maturity.

This 2017 Barolo is Cesare’s classic blend, drawing grapes from four young vineyards aged between 18 and 25 years. The goal is to create a wine that’s approachable from the beginning and good for many occasions—a “party Barolo,” as they put it.

It’s no accident that this wine is so soft, juicy, and ready to drink. Wines from the commune of La Morra—home to luminaries like Voerzio and Altare—have long been known for their elegance on release, with softer tannins and a less stern profile than Barolos from neighboring towns. Rich and savory, this wine is an elegant, multidimensional, and seductive example of ready-to-drink Barolo at its best.
