Another Decided Success from Clos de Tart
There are only six grand cru monopoles in Burgundy. Four in Vosne: La Romanée, La Romanée-Conti, La Grande Rue and La Tâche; and two in Morey-Saint-Denis: Clos de Tart and the adjoining Clos des Lambrays. Clos de Tart, directly above the village, has belonged since 2013 to the Pinault family, only the fourth proprietor of this vineyard since the Middle Ages.
This unique climat, is planted north to south, to avoid erosion and is the only Grand Cru climat in all of Burgundy to boast this unique exposure, which not only prevents erosion but gives the vines additional sun exposure. The soil is the usual limestone found in the northern Côte D'Or, with very little surface debris, and large amounts of crushed rock mixed with clay. A combination of three distinct layers, one of Clos de Tart’s distinguishing features is a rare layer of fossilized shells that mirrors the composition of Romanée Conti’s famed terroir.
Factors of history and terroir all come together in Clos de Tart producing nuanced wine. Clos de Tart has a typically Morey character, bigger than Musigny and Les Amoureuses, not as full-structured as Chambertin. Alongside its neighbors the wine has the backbone of Bonnes-Mares and the lushness of Clos de la Roche, but not the soft center of Clos des Lambrays and Clos Saint-Denis. This is a first class estate producing one of the very best of Burgundy's Grand Cru wines.
The 2017 Clos de Tart has all the power and beauty you would expect, perfumed with tobacco and bramble. With 95 points from Wine Advocate and 98 points from Vinous, the Domiane is finding its stride under the new management. Neal Martin states it is “a brilliant follow-up to the benchmark 2016 by Jacques Desvauges and his team.”
