The Top of Our Pinot Wish List

A dark-fruited gem decorated with dual 93-point scores, the highly coveted, limited-production 2017 Etude Fiddlestix Vineyard Pinot Noir is absolutely stunning—with fleshy, supple richness and a seductive nose of ripe black cherry and spice-dusted plum.

Fiddlestix is a quintessential site on par with legendary Sta. Rita Hills vineyards like Clos Pepe, Sanford & Benedict (which sits just across the street), and La Encantada. Located on the north side of the Santa Ynez Valley inside what is essentially a wind tunnel for Pacific breezes, Pinot grapes here grow slowly to full-bodied, majestic opulence, with mineral undertones from the calcareous soils.

Any time you see “Fiddlestix” on a Pinot Noir label, you know you’re in for something special. Especially when it comes from one of California’s Pinot Noir icons.

Founded in 1982, Etude has had only two winemakers in its storied history: the estate’s founder, Tony Soter—who has consulted for renowned wineries like Araujo, Chappellet, and Dalla Valle—and Jon Priest, the Central Coast whiz who helped lead Adelaida and Taz to fame.

Etude aims to explore the terroir transparency of Pinot Noir, so Fiddlestix Vineyard was a natural fit. Formerly a 133-acre flower farm, it’s practically tailor-made for Pinot Noir cultivation, with briny breezes refreshing the vines and temperatures that just flirt with the mid-70s. Its thirty-two mini-blocks are distinguished by various clones, rootstocks, exposures, and slopes, offering a dazzling Pinot expression that just sings in the glass.
