Mountain Power, Coastal Vibrancy
The world’s top winemakers are flocking to the Côtes du Roussillon. Bordeaux cult visionary Jean-Luc Thunevin bought plots there. Same with California icon Dave Phinney. So did Michel Chapoutier, the Rhône legend with 40+ 100-point wines to his name. The reason?
“Some of the best soil in France and probably in the world," says Chapoutier.
“This is gorgeous wine,” Wine & Spirits said in their 94-point review of the 2017 Villaré Juliani. “If you have the patience to cellar it, it’s sure to last well, but no one will complain if you crack it open tonight.”
That rave made this the magazine’s #2 Languedoc-Roussillon wine of the vintage, rubbing shoulders with bottles that go for $50-60. Intense local demand means very little of this wine makes it to the US—but we’ve scored a small share of this incredible South of France stunner.
Three mountain ranges, eight Mediterranean winds, and 325 days of sunshine per year: That’s the recipe for the Villaré Juliani, which personifies the power of its mountain neighbors and transmits the relentless energy of breaking waves. Grown on vines up to a century old, it consists of 70% Syrah, with 20% brooding Mourvèdre and 10% juicy Grenache. The wine announces itself with aromas of spiced black fruit, licorice, and brined black olives, and a few swirls reveal roast meat, wild herbs, cracked pepper, and flower petals.
This is one of the top bottles from a rising region. Get in on it while you can.
