The Pinot Where We Never Think Twice

The Pinot Where We Never Think Twice

In the sea of unknown wines on any wine list, the LIOCO name is more than a safe bet—it’s a guarantee of absolute deliciousness, at a price point far below the Kosta Browne’s and Williams Seylem’s of the world. It’s the reason LIOCO is a Michelin-starred restaurant darling whose placements add to 28 stars and counting, including spots on the tightly guarded lists of The French Laundry, Spruce, The Progress, The Little Nell, and Jean-Georges. Simply put, LIOCO wines are a sure thing, and they don’t need a complicated explanation from a sommelier because a single sip will sell their Laguna Pinot Noir to anyone with a pulse.

Today’s 2017 LIOCO Laguna Pinot Noir is the poster-child for their impeccable efforts to source only the best, extreme cool-climate fruit. A glowing ruby wine, bursting with ripe berry aromas, the fruit sourced from Goldridge and the biodynamically-farmed Teac Mor vineyards was virtually dripping with graceful fog-caressed character.

Of course, LIOCO has its fair share of awards for persuading the skeptics, including a spot on Wine & Spirits magazine’s Top 100 Wineries in the world list, and Wine Enthusiast critic Virginie Boone called their tasting space a “Breath of Fresh Air,” in the SF Chronicle’s wine country supplement. The list goes on.

But no matter how many wine lists LIOCO’s artful bottles delicately grace, or the swanky company their tasting room keeps in downtown Healdsburg, proprietors Matt and Sara Licklider remain laser-focused on the elements that skyrocketed their boutique label to international stardom: dry farming and fascinating California terroir.

"Ever eat a tomato that's red but has no taste?” Matt asked us. “Chances are it got too much water. We look for dry-farmed, older vineyards, and for sites on the fringe: places where the vines have to struggle to get ripe. It's a risky proposition, but when the stars align, the wines can really dazzle you."

The 2017 rendition of the Laguna bottling dazzles with every sip. High-toned, vibrant berry and floral aromas leap from the glass, giving way to subtle notes of white flowers, rose oil, and violet before the wine’s long, velvety finish.

Among California’s 45,000 acres of Pinot Noir, this bottling stands high above the crowd, and today’s 2017 Laguna Pinot Noir is a tasting room escapee we don’t expect to last.
