Australia’s Ultimate Value Shiraz

Australia’s Ultimate Value Shiraz

We’re keeping this one very quiet. Any time a $20 wine receives a score of 95 points or more, especially from a critic like James Halliday, it’s off to the races for wine buyers. Halliday called the 2017 Norfolk Rise Shiraz from Mount Benson “highly perfumed, inexpensive and totally enjoyable punching well above its weight”—and we’d like to keep the cellar door open for Wine Access clients. Last time Norfolk Rise was shared, our allocation disappeared in a day, so don’t wait on securing this outstanding, inky Shiraz.

This Norfolk rise release wow-ed us by showing the elegant side of Southern Australia, offering gorgeous dark fruit purity and vibrant freshness along with classic Shiraz notes of black pepper and wild game.

The stunning clarity and verve of this graceful Shiraz stems directly from the landscape of Mount Benson. Situated on Southern Australia’s Limestone Coast, less than three miles from the Pacific, Mount Benson benefits from the ocean’s breezy, cooling influence as well as the iconic terra rossa soils common to the region. Brick red in color, these loamy, clay-based soils are very well draining, stressing the vines to yield wines of great concentration and purity. The 2017 Norfolk Rise demonstrates this in spades, showing loads of brambly blackberry and dark cherry fruit.

Compared to most under-$20 wines, the 2017 Norfolk Rise Shiraz is in a league of its own. It boasts the pedigree of its incredible terroir, and of its producer, Kreglinger Wine Estates—founded in Antwerp in 1797—rolled into one. This level of seamlessness, polish, and complexity could support a much heftier price tag, which is why we encourage you not to forward this offer to anyone who isn’t already a Wine Access client. When the word gets out on this 2017, supply will inevitably dry up quickly.
