A Clinic in Central Coast Syrah

There are few things we love more than succulent and complex Syrah, so choosing just one seems like a tall order, but the 2017 Patterson & Sebastiano made it an easy call.

Charlotte Randolph, beverage director for two-Michelin-starred Californios, said Piedrasassi makes some of “the best California Syrah” and insisted we absolutely had to include this bottle. After tasting for ourselves, we couldn’t agree more.

The man behind this magnificence is winemaker Sashi Moorman, who Charlotte called “the best winemaker of Syrah in the United States,” Wine Enthusiast dubbed a “king of cool-climate Syrah,” and Decanter named “one of California’s brightest talents.” He’s crafted critical darlings for Stolpman, Sandhi, and Evening Land, and parlayed that experience into his inspired work with Piedrasassi, particularly this rich and site-transparent 2017.

Piedrasassi supplied their all-star winemaker with grapes from two of the best vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills. Patterson is situated on a north-facing slope right above Sine Qua Non’s Eleven Confessions Vineyard, the acclaimed site of 99- and 100-point wines. Opposite Patterson on a high-elevation slope, Sebastiano is a celebrated vineyard that seemingly every Central Coast winemaker wants a piece of, including member-favorites Dragonette, Foxen, and Ojai.

The winery couldn’t have chosen a more complementary pair of sites. Patterson’s savoriness and spice combine seamlessly with Sebastiano’s lush fruit for a deep and complex Syrah, one that has firmly established Piedrasassi as a Central Coast go-to for both us and Michelin-pedigree sommeliers.

The wine showcases dark cherry and purple-flower aromas that draw you in for sip after sip of plum, cherry, and savory spice. It pairs with everything from barbacoa tamales to roast lamb and will continue evolving for a few more years.
