“Think Sonoma’s Best”
We were mid-lunch, seated on the buzzing back patio at Chalkboard in downtown Healdsburg, when our friend Linda called for fresh glasses. From the look on her face we knew we were in for a treat—but we didn’t know we were about to be introduced to one of the year’s best Pinot Noir deals.
“This is from just up the road,” Linda said, lowering her voice a bit while producing a gorgeous bottle. “It’s from a top-five American Pinot Noir house, hands down—think Sonoma’s best.”
She wasn’t kidding. The ruby-hued 2017 Primrose Trail Grand Reserve filled our glasses with a high-flying bouquet of fresh red roses, wild strawberry, and a dash of cinnamon. The incredible nose piqued our senses before a silky palate with mouthwatering red fruit and layers of clove, orange peel, and earthy complexity whisked us away. It was magical stuff.
Linda could see our wheels turning. “That beautiful spice and polish is from nine months in new French oak, plus another three months in medium-toast American oak. They pulled out all the stops for this one. And no, I can’t tell you any more than that. All the other details are protected under an NDA a mile long.”
This is a Pinot Noir of outstanding complexity, and it comes from a red-hot appellation bursting at the seams with cult-Pinot producers. Deep-fruited and aromatic, it shows textbook Sonoma richness and juiciness along with fine delineation and extraordinary purity that reveal its high-end origins.
