The Sparkling Rosé to Stock Up On
We’re sitting pretty on one of the best sparkling rosé deals in the business: The elegant 2017 Roger Goulart Coral Brut Cava Rosé, a gorgeously crisp, mineral expression of Grenache and Pinot Noir, offering bright red fruit shot through with streaks of stone and lime zest.
This is a phenomenal value at just $23 a bottle —half the price of rosé Champagne, and with no waiting period to enjoy it. Pop the cork tomorrow on this effervescent stunner from Spain’s Cava pioneer and you’ll see why it wowed our tasting table with its fresh fruit flavors and persistent acidity. But you won’t find the Coral—a favorite in Europe—on many U.S. shelves, so spring for it today before we have to put up our “Out of Stock” sign like everyone else.
One of the beauties of great sparkling rosé is that it can be paired with nearly anything, and sing. We’ll never forget sitting on an importer’s porch in the breeze, sipping this appropriately named Coral, pale pink with a fine bead, alongside a plate of radishes pulled from the garden, elevated with coarse salt and a hit of umami from spicy Asian mayonnaise.
That hors d’oeuvre brilliantly magnified the precise raspberry tart and wild strawberry notes of this wine, as well as its gushing acidity, signs of the master sparkling wine maker. The tradition of Cava making at Roger Goulart is deep. Founded in 1882, the estate was one of the first in Spain to produce Cava using the méthode champenoise—with secondary fermentation in the bottle, hand-riddling, and extended lees contact. Over the course of more than a century, those methods have barely changed. All this care and detail translates into a real everyday luxury.
The Grenache and Pinot Noir grapes for this wine hail from vineyards in the Penedès region in Catalonia, Spain, where coastal hills moderate temperatures and lead to wines of great body and balance. The fruit is harvested at night to preserve freshness, and the varieties are vinified separately. 50 days of lees contact fill out the structure, while short aging means the beautiful fruit notes here come across with absolute purity.
