Which Kind of Pinot Lover Are You?
When a California Pinot Noir is stunning enough to make us step back and take notice, it’s worth going all in. That’s why we secured all we could of this stunning, exclusive 2017 Royal Prince Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir. It’s one of the most compelling California Pinot Noirs we’ve tried in recent years.
From the moment we saw this vivacious, magenta-hued Pinot Noir, we were entranced. Deeply scented with bold aromas of cherry pie and baking spices, it maintains delicate floral nuances for lift. Though the palate is juicy and persistent, herbal and spice notes add complexity and delight. Upon tasting this charming and elegant Pinot Noir, we were immediately convinced that the Royal Prince should be a Wine Access exclusive.
Today it is, and at 38% off SRP there’s no better time to discover your new favorite Pinot Noir.
Crafted by Wine Enthusiast 40 Under 40 Tastemaker (and Wine Access favorite winemaker) Maayan Koschitzky, Royal Prince Pinot displays top-notch talent in a bargain bottle: Koschitzky learned the tricks of the trade at legendary Screaming Eagle, and then from 100-point icon Philippe Melka. Working alongside Melka, Maayan has learned to craft Lail ($80), Moone-Tsai ($90), Fairchild ($300+), and Tusk ($700) as he’s risen to director of winemaking at Atelier Melka. Koschitzky is a master of Cabernet, but when the opportunity came to craft a Pinot Noir from Santa Maria—he jumped at the chance.
The 2017 Royal Prince is an impressively balanced and fresh Pinot Noir, owing its purity and structure to Maayan’s deft hand as a winemaker, courtesy of his impeccable experience: It’s an elegant wine, delivering a bounty of purple flowers and red roses complemented by freshly baked cherry pie notes, hinting at vanilla baking spices. A beautiful orchestra of cola, herbs, and flowers finishes with a remarkably long and juicy finish.
Located just an hour from downtown Santa Barbara, the east-west oriented Santa Maria Valley funnels cool Pacific fog in from the shoreline each morning, blanketing the vines with a morning chill before blowing off during warm, sunny afternoons. This fine balance allows Pinot Noir grapes to ripen slowly, building character and complexity while maintaining lively acidity. The result is a mouthwatering blend of ripe, round, juicy fruit and savory, herbal undertones that has become emblematic of Santa Maria Valley.
The Royal Prince Pinot Noir’s lasting impression is one of incredible balance—and utter deliciousness. Place top-notch Santa Maria Valley fruit into the expert hands of California’s most talked-about winemaker, add a healthy dose of pure passion, and you get a finely-crafted wine that stands out in the pack of California Pinot Noirs.
