From 2012 to 2016, California endured a historic drought, then welcomed a wet winter at the end of 2016 and in early 2017. The rains were needed to replenish the groundwater and reinvigorate the vines, and they set the stage for a beautiful and bountiful vintage at Silver Oak’s Alexander Valley home. By the time the North Coast’s well-publicized travails arrived at the end of the season, Silver Oak’s gorgeous 2017 Cab was resting in custom-crafted American oak barrels.

A beautiful and deep purple-black color, the 2017 has ripe cassis, loganberry, and plum aromas ensconced in elements of vanilla, clove, and violet. Built on structured but plush tannins, it’s awash in black-fruit flavors highlighted by pipe tobacco, crème brûlée, and wild herbal nuances that commingle on a long finish. True to Silver Oak, it’s beautifully constructed now but destined to add considerable complexity with time in the cellar.
