    A Chance Meeting with Two Napa Wine Stars

    The 2017 Stack House Cabernet is stacked: Two Robert Parker favorite vintners, stellar Napa Valley mountain fruit, impeccable winemaking, and a Napa Valley insider price. If we hadn’t been in the perfect place at the right time, we might have missed it all. Here’s what happened:

    We’d ducked into one of our favorite restaurants in Napa Valley, chef Sean O’Toole’s TORC, for a quick glass of Champagne. Sitting together at the bar, sharing a dry-aged steak and a bottle of wine, were two Parker-anointed wine stars Anna Monticelli and Kimberly Jones. They poured us a sip of their Stack House Cabernet, and we were smitten by the ripe aromas of blackberry, mocha, black currant, blueberries, and clove leading into a plush and silky finish. We reveled in the beautiful Cabernet… and braced for the price. 

    And when they told us, we doubled the amount we were going to ask for. Anna and Kimberly’s portfolios include some triple-digit-priced icons, so how were they able to offer us this opulent blackberry-and-chocolate Cabernet for just $34.99? 

    We wanted to know, but what we wanted more was to claim as much as we could for Wine Access members. Because Napa’s long on cachet but can be tough on the wallet, we won’t let values like this one pass us by. You shouldn’t either.

    It’s no wonder that Monticelli and Jones teamed up to create such a Cabernet whose first vintage Robert Parker called an “elegant sleeper selection and a terrific value:” Monticelli is a winemaker of spotless credentials who spent five years assisting Philippe Melka at Bryant Family, where they turned out several perfection-chasing 97+- and 98-point wines. That was after her stint in Château Cheval Blanc’s legendary cellars, and her turn as assistant winemaker at Seavey.

    As Robert Parker has noted, Jones’s C.V. is just as impressive: He credits her with representing “many of the best producers” in California: names like Ad Vivum, Blankiet, Fait-Main, Hourglass, Kongsgaard, Scarecrow, Maybach, O’Shaughnessy, and Ovid. In other words, the fruit that Jones delivers into Anna’s hands is top-notch. 

    The 2017 is composed of coveted mountain fruit: 87% of the grapes come from sites in the Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain, Diamond Mountain, and Atlas Peak AVAs, which makes for a wine of beautifully brooding character. 20 months in 85% new French oak (in a $35 wine?!) imparts beautiful toasty and spiced quality, which is especially charming in a Cabernet that’s meant to be opened early and often. Pair it with a dry-aged steak, share it with a friend… however you enjoy it, Stack House is sure to impress.
