A Showstopping Red from Etna’s Volcanic Slopes

Sicily has long been the source of some of Italy’s best values, but Tasca d’Almerita’s dual 92-point Perricone pushes the quality level up a notch. A signature red from a Wine Enthusiast Winery of the Year, its bright, textured personality is stunning—the essence of their beautiful Mediterranian climate in a bottle.

The Rhône and Cabernet lovers who snapped up our last Perricone offer can attest that this grape is life changing stuff—its very existence is improbable, while its depth and nuance suggest a bottle three times its cost. We’re doubling down on this powerhouse red, made from the mightiest Sicilian grape.

Tasca’s original Perricone vines, planted in 1959, became the basis for the very first single-vineyard wine in all of Sicily. Since then, their wines have elevated this rare variety and their entire region to the reputation they both enjoy among the vinous cognoscenti. Complemented by Mount Etna’s active, volcanic geology, this is an earth-shattering red value we’re thrilled to share.

Tasca is Sicily’s proverbial Godfather, the estate pushing an entire region to new heights: The estate has been in the Tasca family for nearly 200 years, so their dominance (and incredible value) over Sicilian upstarts makes complete sense: The eighth-generation family knows the land inside and out, and that understanding yields complex, captivating wines—the kind that led the estate to Sicily’s first Winery of the Year title.

Their 2017 Guarnaccio Perricone is a perfect example of their expertise in action. A high-toned, textured red, it’s great as an aperitif, or alongside Moroccan tagines and Italian red-sauce dishes: the rare red that can simultaneously inspire deep conversations and make a weeknight dinner feel like a splurge.

Wildly perfumed on the nose, florals and vibrant fruit pivot dramatically to focused, taut flavors of wild plum, five-spice, violets, and cedar. Across the luscious, full-bodied palate, firm-grained tannins underscore spicy black and blue fruit notes that linger deliciously on the finish.

Given their worldwide accolades, it’d be easy to imagine that Tasca’s prices would skyrocket, but they take their duty as stewards of Sicilian wine seriously—and want Perricone in as many glasses as possible. We’re happy to help them with that.
