Titus Cab from Sacred St. Helena Soils

No winemaker is more beloved by Wine Access members than 100-point star Phil Titus—his luscious Titus and Coho reds have been constant sell-out favorites with Wine Access members, inspiring dozens of four- and five-star reviews, and raves from members who regret not squirreling away more. “Should have purchased more of it” is a constant refrain.

Today we’re thrilled to announce that we’ve scored one of Phil’s masterpiece bottlings—one that has eluded us until today—in the 2017 Titus Cabernet Sauvignon. Consisting of exquisitely ripe Cabernet grown primarily on the 40-acre Titus Ranch Estate north of St. Helena, this is the centerpiece of the Titus lineup, and the kind of Cabernet you’d expect from sublime St. Helena terroir, interpreted by the master who helped put the iconic Chappellet on the map.

It’s also the kind of Cabernet for which you’d expect—and be more than willing—to pay $80+ per bottle. Today, we’ve got it at 25% off. Just $45 for our members.

The Titus family has owned their property here for 52 years, and grapes grown on these well-drained, sandy alluvial soils make up the core of the exquisitely focused 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, which represents St. Helena terroir at its best. Deep purple-black in color, the wine is awash in aromas of black currant and blackberry preserves, blueberry cobbler, crème caramel, toast, vanilla, and clove. Elegant and rich on the palate, the fine and perfectly integrated tannins balance the warm and ripe black and blue fruit, leaving pie spice, vanilla, and tobacco notes hanging like a pleasant melody on the finish.

Situated in the heart of the high-rent district of St. Helena, the Titus family’s property consists of 40 acres at the base of Howell Mountain, between Silverado Trail and the Napa River. Originally planted to other varieties, the family identified the hot up-valley spot—with its mixture of dusty clay, sand, and river loam—as perfectly suited to Bordeaux varieties. By the mid-1970s, the first replant was complete, and the property is now dominated by thriving Cabernet Sauvignon.

The five blocks of estate Cabernet that go into the 2017 were picked multiple times between September 26th and October 9th, then destemmed and fermented on the skins. Aged in 60% new French and Hungarian oak and bottled in May of last year, the Cabernet is showing beautiful richness and concentration in its youth, and has the potential to age exquisitely.

A Cabernet well worth the wait, from a Wine Access superstar winemaker. We’re thrilled to have it, and you’ll be thrilled to drink it—now and over the next decade.
