The Best Argument Is In the Glass

The 2017 Tobias Blue Oaks Chardonnay is one of the most striking single-vineyard Chardonnay deals we’ve ever found. Meticulously grown by two families with peerless wine knowledge, it shows off one of the fastest-rising regions in California in a white that drinks well above its $25 SRP—and we’ve got it for $17.

For the white wine fans out there looking for a bargain on California Chardonnay and not willing to sacrifice one iota of quality, Tobias’s Blue Oaks Chardonnay is your wine. We recommend you take it home by the case.

The team behind Tobias has winemaking excellence in their DNA: Toby Forman is the son of Ric Forman, the pioneer who made Napa Valley’s first non-malolactic Chardonnay at Stony Hill, then led Sterling, co-founded Newton, and counseled Duckhorn. Toby’s wife Dawn Pauli Forman is the daughter of Bill Pauli, the former president of the California Association of Winegrape Growers. She represents the fourth generation of her family to farm in California.

In order to secure their Chardonnay, Toby and Dawn head 90 miles north of Napa, to Dawn’s family’s Blue Oaks Vineyard in the Potter Valley sub-AVA of Mendocino. Their vines enjoy the massive diurnal temperature swing that makes Potter Valley such a great place for Chardonnay, and results in a fabulously ripe yet racy bottle.

Enter the 2017 growing season, which was excellent. A wet winter replenished the soils after several drought years, before a summer of warm days and cool nights slowed the pace, allowing for a long hang time that yielded rich, ripe Chardonnay.

Tobias and Dawn control all the farming and winemaking decisions, and they gave the wine a long treatment, aging it for 18 months in 45% new French oak, followed by six months in 10% French oak before bottling. The result has white peach, yellow plum, and lemon blossom shining through a creamy texture—no butter, and just the right amount of background oak.

Hailing from the new Chardonnay hotbed of California, made in tiny amounts by the next generation of two California wine legends, the Tobias Blue Oaks has a strong argument going for it. But the best argument—glimmering gold, creamy, clean, and elegant—is in the glass.
