The Best Five of Their 100 Acres

Mark Mazzoni grew up immersed in the wine business, AND he paid his dues along the way. As the fourth generation of the Mazzoni winemaking family in Geyserville, the ethic of hard work was instilled in him from a young age, and it served him well in both the vineyard and the cellar, managing vineyards for the likes of Littorai and Thomas Rivers Brown, and making wine at places like Vineyard 29 and Flanagan Wines.

He may well be the best Sonoma County winemaker you’ve never heard of.

Mark’s family is a prime Cabernet grower for Jordan and Jackson Family wines—not to mention some marquee players we can’t name—and he has his pick of the best fruit from his family’s 100 acres of vines in Geyserville. For his 2017 Cabernet, he chose a block from his family’s original 1931 holdings: five acres of vines that were special enough to bear a $74 price tag at the winery.

Mazzoni’s approach is focused on a pure expression of this prime Sonoma terroir. He uses open-top concrete tanks for fermentation, then ages the wine primarily in neutral French oak, so there’s nothing to get in the way of pure, pristine fruit expression in the glass.

Alexander Valley Cabernet is as essential to the American steakhouse as the steak itself, so if you’re like us—the head chef of your own at-home chophouse—you’ve found your house Cab. Pour yourself a big glass to prime the pump while you sear those flatirons this spring and summer, and repeat until the meal is just a lovely memory!
