We love discovering hush-hush local gems, and it doesn’t get more local than the 94574 Sauvignon Blanc. It’s named for the St. Helena zip code, and it rarely ever leaves the surrounding area. Sourced from a single Rutherford vineyard near Alpha Omega and Grgich Hills, this nuanced citrus stunner is typically only available at a few local restaurants and boutique wine shops.
The past two vintages of the 94574 we’ve offered have garnered 142(!) four- and five-star reviews from Wine Access members combined, along with praises like “Great value for the price,” and “Will case up if offered again.”
Pour yourself a glass and you’ll understand why St. Helena locals want to keep this in the area. It springs forward in a melody of passionfruit, Key lime, matcha tea, and fresh herbal aromas. Bright citrus and tropical fruit meld into a crisp acidity and fresh herbs on the finish—all the vibrancy we love in Sauvignon Blanc with an engrossing Rutherford complexity.
When proprietors Dave Berry and Henry Schlangen tapped winemaker Sam Baxter of Terra Valentine to make the single-vineyard 94574, they had the late Didier Dagueneau’s legendary Silex from Pouilly-Fumé in mind. They tasked Sam with making a wine in the style of Silex, one of the world’s great Sauvignon Blancs—a daunting enough prospect, even before Dave and Henry dropped the other shoe: They wanted to offer their wine for a fraction of what Dagueneau’s three-digit gem commands. But Baxter didn’t run for the hills. He took on the challenge and crafted a classic.
The trio’s lucky break came when an exceptional fruit source came online: the organically farmed San Mateo Ranch in Rutherford, a Cabernet-dominated AVA that has also proven itself an extraordinarily hospitable place for Sauvignon Blanc. San Mateo is planted with two clones of Sauvignon Blanc: Sauvignon Musqué, which provides perfumed and tropical aromatics, and Clone 1, which brings acidity and citrus notes to the 94574.
