Fish Tacos and Albariño in Dolores Park
This is the story of the 2018 Adegas Gran Vinum Albariño and how it saved the day alongside a plate of fish tacos at Dolores Park…
After tasting through 100+ wines, fatigue set in, and we were about to head home for a lackluster microwave burrito dinner when our importer friend did us a solid.
Just as we made our exit our friend at the Adegas table slipped two bottles into a tote, and simply said, “Enjoy.” Of all the wines in the portfolio we had tasted that day, none stood out like the 2018 Adegas Gran Vinum Albariño Seleccion Especial—and we’d said it aloud several times. We knew just what to do. We sped to the Mission to pick up fish and shrimp tacos, then made our way to the top of the hill at Dolores Park.
This crisp, bright white shows an amazing freshness, which comes from its home in the chilly coastal Spanish province of Galicia. It's a highly aromatic, standout Albariño, capable of transporting you to the misty coasts of Galicia with its gorgeous fruit and incredible freshness, verve, and salinity.
The Piñeiro Cores family behind this release farms 50-year-old Albariño vines planted on free-draining slopes of sandy, granitic soils. Because of the region’s cool, even temperatures, the grapes hang on the vines for a long, long time, allowing for incredible flavor development, while maintaining the grape’s vibrant, mouthwatering signature.
With the sun setting around us, we popped the Albariño and poured about four—ok, maybe five—ounces of shimmering, lemon-hued wine into our glasses. Six inches from our noses we could already pick up bright notes of citrus and tropical fruit. Bringing our glasses closer revealed ginger and a refreshing salinity layered with garden herbs.
As dead as our taste buds were from the day of tasting, they perked right up from the incredible freshness and mouthwatering, lemony acidity on the palate of this Albariño. Given that the wine was stirred on the yeast lees for five months, impeccably creamy layers of fruit emerge—nectarine and melon intersect seamlessly with tart, candied lemon, and a stony minerality. Next to a shrimp taco with a squeeze of lime...it was like heaven.
Drink this now, when it’s fresh and at its peak, preferably amongst friends, in a beautiful place, alongside a good seafood dish.
