Spain’s Expressive Overture

Whenever someone wants a recommendation or asks why we love the unique Spanish Mencía variety, we point to the Finca Luna Beberide without hesitation.

Mencía has ascended as a star among US sommeliers, popping up on the wine lists of MICHELIN-starred restaurants from NYC to San Francisco. Its best expressions come out of Bierzo, and Wine Enthusiast has named Luna Beberide Mencías among the “Top Wines of Bierzo,” making this an exemplar of the region.

Wine Spectator listed Mencía as one of “The Must-Try Wines of Our Time.” East of Galicia and west of Ribera del Duero, Bierzo has higher elevations and enjoys a cool climate that lends the Luna Beberide its freshness, while slate and granite soils provide distinct earthy and mineral notes.

From 60-year-old, estate-grown vines, the medium-bodied, aromatic 2018 Luna Beberide is incredibly hard to put down. Its tension between red fruit levity and spicy depth—a duality sure to delight fans of New World Pinot and Northern Rhône Syrah—yields a lively and intricate wine with the expressive bravado of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni.” Crescendos of hibiscus, cranberry, pomegranate, and black pepper are balanced by mezzo-piano depths of dark fruit and spice on the palate.

Winemaker Alejandro Luna and his team hand-harvest the grapes from south-facing slopes, ferment them with native yeasts, and give them 12 months in French oak to coax out spice elements without compromising its bright fruit flavors.

Master of Wine Jancis Robinson counts herself a fan of the wine, noting “We need more fresh wines like this in Spain.” Luna Beberide’s wines don’t often make it across the Atlantic, but this is a wine we think everyone should have a chance to try.
