    White-Tablecloth Quality Without the Price

    Restaurant beverage directors are constantly searching for wines that delivered white-tablecloth pedigree while skipping the white-tablecloth price tag. Today’s 2018 BOLD Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands is the kind of coveted, restaurant-worthy overachiever that epitomizes that level of value. 

    Made by Master Sommelier-turned-winemaker Chris Miller—who turned Wolfgang Puck’s Spago Beverly Hills into a Wine Spectator Grand Award winner—the 2018 BOLD Pinot is as delicious as they come. Grown on a blue-chip old-vine site in the windswept Santa Lucia Highlands AVA, it’s fit for the table at a place like Spago, but costs a fraction of what you’d expect to pay for its black tea- and spice-laden brilliance. 

    We've known Chris Miller for years, but we never had the opportunity to taste his wines until recently. When we sat down at Napa’s Oxbow Market just a few weeks ago, Chris opened up an incredible lineup, nine bottles deep. Between BOLD and his accompanying Seabold label, Chris translates some of the Central Coast’s greatest vineyards into the glass with captivating precision, focus, and honesty. 

    Paraiso Vineyard, the lone source of the 2018 BOLD Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir, is a historic site planted in a snaking line of hilltop terraces along the Santa Lucia Mountains. This is one of the most sought-after Pinot regions in the state, where the top terroirs are starting to fetch prices in line with those of Russian River and Carneros. 

    At an average of 45 years of age, the veteran Pinot Noir vines that produced this wine are some of the oldest in the appellation, and they yield beautifully concentrated dark fruit balanced by high-altitude energy and gorgeous spice—and it’s all overflowing from this lively and harmonious 2018.

    This is it: a white-tablecloth wine without the white-tablecloth price, if there ever was one. This is the kind of wine you'd be thrilled to see on a restaurant list, and will thank yourself for having at home, always at the ready.
