The Ultimate Baby Brunello

Nestled in the Tuscan hills, Capanna has been “on a real roll of late” according to Vinous, and this aromatic ruby red single-handedly proves the point, offering a “drop-dead gorgeous” taste of Capanna’s inimitable terroir.

Capanna has been owned by the Cencioni family since 1957, and patriarch Giuseppe Cencioni was one of the 25 founders of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. The estate sits on the hill of Montosoli—the Rodeo Drive of the Brunello appellation—where even the younger Rosso vines enjoy the prized galestro soil and a southeasterly exposure ideal for soaking up the Mediterranean sun.

Capanna’s consulting oenologist, Paolo Vagaggini, is known around the world as “Mr. Sangiovese.” He not only heads the entire Sangiovese program at the University of Bordeaux, but he counts Fuligni and the iconic Biondi-Santi among his star Brunello clients.

It’s his deft hand up and down the estate’s portfolio that inspired The Wine Advocate’s Italian critic to write, “I am experiencing a Capanna enlightenment” in 2019 and called the wines they poured for her “one of my favorite flights tasted from Montalcino this year.”

Just like Brunello, this wine is fermented on the skins for nearly a month before finishing in traditional Slavonian oak casks. What emerges is a Tuscan red full of classic European charm that delivers value sip after sip—the ultimate baby Brunello that drinks well beyond its years.
