“Legendary” Doesn’t Do It Justice
This is a chance to get your hands on a bottle of Dalla Valle, a bona fide Napa Valley legend. In fact, “legend” doesn’t quite cut it. Cult wine of this caliber is simply beyond labels. Perfect for any cellar or simply as an investment, it’s a phenomenal wine that will be snapped up immediately.
Hailing from a vintage that will possibly go down as one of the greatest ever in Napa Valley, the 2018 Collina shows why Dalla Valle has status as one of Napa Valley’s legendary wineries. It’s got ripe and complex aromas of black currant, blueberry, black cherry, mocha, star anise, graphite, tilled earth, and cloves, which precede a dense, velvety, and seamless palate. The wine is still quite youthful, but its elegant tannins will enable it to gain complexity over the coming decade and beyond.
It’s not uncommon for a taste of Dalla Valle’s Oakville terroir, ushered to the bottle by winemaker Andy Erickson and consulting winemaker Michel Rolland, to cost around $500—which is why this offer of Collina is such an incredible opportunity. We’re thrilled that our friendship with Naoko and Maya Dalla Valle allowed us to bring it to you, and we can’t wait for you to take part.
Dalla Valle, one of the greatest of California’s cult producers, crafts some of the most coveted wines in the country. Aside from a handful of top restaurants (The French Laundry, for example, lists bottles of Dalla Valle Maya for $1,500 each), almost all of their new releases are claimed by members of the Dalla Valle mailing list.
And if you want to be in that special club—well, good luck. You’ll have to spend years on the waiting list before finally (if ever) getting the privilege of buying directly from the winery.
The 100-point Dalla Valle estate has been turning out beyond-belief wines for decades, and Collina is one of their most accessible superstars. The name translates to “hill” in Italian, and it’s been given to this incredibly delicious red because the majority of the fruit comes from the younger vines of Dalla Valle’s legendary hillside blocks.
In this 2018, winemaker Andy Erickson (who also has crafted Screaming Eagle) and internationally renowned consulting enologist Michel Rolland (who has worked with Harlan, Château Ausone, and countless other top producers around the world) have brought together 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Petit Verdot to create a wine that strikes an elusive balance: It’s phenomenal right now, but is also capable of aging for a decade-plus, with Dalla Valle’s characteristic grace and complexity.
When Gustav and Naoko Dalla Valle started in 1982, they couldn’t have had a clue that the wines bearing their name would rise to the level of international classics that they have. And they also couldn’t have known that their daughter Maya, named after their famous vineyard, would one day play such an important part in carrying on the family’s name and values. But both have come to pass, and the wines of Dalla Valle are as inspiring now as they have ever been.
