A Pinot So Classy, It’s Been to a Royal Wedding

When we were putting together our collection with Le Comptoir’s Chef and Proprietor Gary Menes, there was no discussion about the first wine that would go in it: He insisted on Domaine Eden’s 2018 Pinot Noir. With the signature personality that makes Mount Eden “one of the truly elite wineries in the United States,” according to Vinous founder Antonio Galloni, it’s a singular expression of terroir that captivates the palate and mind.

Under the helm of winemaker Jeffrey Patterson since 1981, Mount Eden has carved out a special place in California’s Pinot scene, making age-worthy bottles that reflect the unique terroir of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Their Domaine Eden Pinot Noir offers “the same super-classic style found at sister property Mount Eden” according to Galloni—meaning nuanced fruit, exceptional complexity, and an age-worthy structure, making it one of the Golden State’s great bottles.

That combination of restrained elegance and immediate approachability is why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle served Domaine Eden (the ‘15) at their wedding, and why we adore the 2018 version today. The nose opens with beautiful aromas of cherries, tea, and delicate floral aromas that preview a palate of rich fruit and vibrant acidity. It promises brilliant evolution over the next seven years, but it’s also hard to keep away from today.

“From vineyards that Martin Ray made famous—red fruit, violets, and crushed stones are the characteristics of Santa Cruz vines that are planted in the right sites,” Chef Menes told us. “A perfect match for a traditional yet up-to-date stew of peas, potatoes, scallions, hearts of romaine, and sauce cuisson.”
