Super-Tuscan Fans, Be Vigilant
When The Wine Advocate declares, “You absolutely can't beat this unbelievable value from Tuscany,” you pay attention, which is exactly what Wine Access members did with the last vintage of the La Massa Toscana IGT we offered. It sold out instantly, just like the previous few vintages before that, crowning La Massa as one of our top-selling labels.
To the chagrin of our Super Tuscan fans, it’s taken two years for us to get La Massa back, but it makes a roaring return with this 2018 beauty. It earned 93 points from The Wine Advocate, which praised its “panoramic bouquet” and summed it up as succinctly as anyone could: With La Massa, “you get great value.”
Giampaolo Motta has made La Massa one of the greatest Super Tuscan estates, thanks in large part to his hiring Bordeaux’s legendary 100-point magnate Stéphane Derenoncourt—whom Wine Spectator once hailed as the “world’s hottest winemaker.” Together, Motta and Derenoncourt continue to outdo themselves with every vintage.
Motta had always coveted La Massa’s soils, so when the estate came up for sale in 1992 he seized the opportunity to purchase it. Since then, praise has accompanied every release, often led by The Wine Advocate, which has hailed the “extreme elegance” of La Massa’s wines, while famed wine writer Monica Larner recently called it “one of my favorite estates” in the region.
Usually, the only thing we have against Super Tuscans are their super price tags. La Massa comes in at less than a top Chiant—this one’s a winner, and we don’t know when it’ll be back!
