Personality & Soul in a Bottle

Personality & Soul in a Bottle

We had to elbow our way to the table, past the throngs of sommeliers and critics, to get a splash of the 2018 Hiedler Grüner Veltliner Löss—the wine legendary importer Terry Theise proclaimed was “jammed with soul and personality.”

He wasn’t wrong. Aromas of honey, apricot, and peach harmonized vivid flavors of apricot, honey, fennel, sage, and lemongrass, making this wine the rare, unanimous, best-in-class bottle at a recent judging panel.

The 2018 Hiedler Grüner Veltliner Löss gives premier white wines a challenge from coast to coast, tearing devotees of bright, unoaked dry white wines away from classics like Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc, and making them Grüner-Veltliner obsessives.

If Austrian wines aren't yet on your radar, let this be your introduction. In a country famous for producing some of the most crisp, vibrant white wines in the world, the 2018 Hiedler is a standout.

This 2018 bottling from the Kamptal region of Austria, with its aromas of honey and sweet corn, and a creamy palate that carries vivid flavors of apricot, honey, fennel, sage, and lemongrass, was hands-down the wine of the day. Theise, the most respected importer of Austrian wines in the United States, agreed, calling Hiedler his Winery of the Vintage, pointing out that the wines seem to be indicative of “a new level for this already-fine estate,” adding that “there are no other wines like them.”

And they’re only getting better: From their home estate in the picture-perfect town of Langenlois, Ludwig Hiedler and his sons Dietmar and Ludwig Jr. are carrying on a generations-long tradition. With 86 acres of vineyards and a family history in the local wine business stretching back to 1856, Hiedler’s wines have always been among the most beloved in the entire country. The Hiedlers farm the land sustainably and ferment the wine using indigenous yeast, which allows the character of their beloved vineyards to shine through with shimmering clarity. This is hands-on, artisanal winemaking at its best.

A wine like the 2018 Hiedler Grüner Veltliner Löss is cause for celebration. This is the white wine you’ve been waiting for.
