Keplinger’s Signature Syrah
Helen Keplinger is one of the most decorated and accomplished winemakers in Napa Valley: she’s been named Food & Wine magazine’s Winemaker of the Year, and made cult wines for Grace Family and Bryant, not to mention a 100-point Cabernet for Carte Blanche. But no bottles capture her craft better than those she makes under her namesake Keplinger label.
Grown at Lee Hudson’s famed Hudson Ranch in Carneros, Helen’s Hangman’s Syrah is one of the true great Syrahs of California. Helen’s single block, which is named for an old Hangman’s tree and is custom-farmed by Kelly MacLeod, sits against the southern foot of the Mayacamas Range, and boasts a mix of shallow, stony, and well-draining volcanic and maritime soils thgat keep yields very low. The result is a beautiful Syrah, brimming with violets and clove on the nose, layered with blueberries and raspberries, and boasting plenty of spice and leather. Accented with 5% co-fermented Viognier, it’s a worthy homage to great Côte-Rôtie—one that earned an incredible 99 points from Jeb Dunnuck.
