Power with Purpose
In the late 1980s, Willamette Valley pioneer Don Lange took a flier on a young parcel in the foothills west of Monmouth, Oregon. The site—boasting deep Bellpine soils and the kind of southeast exposure coveted in Burgundy—had been planted to Pinot Noir by its adventurous new owners, who named it after the feeling it gave them. They called it Freedom Hill.
Since then, Freedom Hill has come to be regarded as one of Oregon’s Grand Cru–level vineyards, and Lange’s Freedom Hill Pinot has become more than a key expression of the site—it’s become one of the great wines of the Willamette Valley.
We haven’t had the chance to offer Lange’s Freedom Hill Pinot for two vintages, so we’re absolutely thrilled to have the ONLY bottles of the 96-point 2018 available outside the winery. The wine, which James Suckling called “power with purpose” in his glowing review, is crafted from the very best 10–15% of Lange’s Freedom Hill grapes and aged in new and neutral French oak barrels.
Sitting on Lange’s stunning new patio under a bright, high Oregon sun—on the same 45° North latitude line as Burgundy—we took in views of two volcanos and relished this beautiful Pinot. Announcing its pedigree from the first sip, this wine is a gorgeous picture of a world-class site that every Pinot Noir lover should know.
A truly special release for longtime Lange fans and for those who love all Pinot Noir, we don’t take it for granted for a second. Neither should you—so grab your share.
