Finding an exemplary Sancerre from a strong vintage under-$30 is rare. Finding one this good at $19.9 is practically unheard of. The 2018 vintage of Michel Vattan’s Sancerre made such an impression on us that we claimed the entire U.S. allocation.
Few and far between are the French Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc wines that hail from 45-year-old vines from one single source, rooted in the region’s famous chalky soils. But the vineyards at the family-owned Michel Vattan estate in the tiny village of Maimbray are anything but average. Bursting with just-picked citrus zest, green apple, and rocky mineral undertones, this is the crisp, complex, classic you’ll want within reach this summer.
Woody and stout half-century-old Sauvignon Blanc vines wend their way out of the gentle gray slopes that cover the central Loire Valley landscape Vattan calls home. Interspersed with castles and small farms, the bucolic setting belies the secret to inimitable, world-class Sancerre: the crusty, fossil-laden terres blanches, and the jagged, fragmented limestone caillotes soils from which the Cuvée Calcaire is drawn. The Vattan estate, which has grown from five to 22 acres over three generations, consists of these two distinct Sancerrois soils which lend this wine its exceptional, mouthwatering acidity and crisp texture.
