Patrick McNeil Has Hit California Paydirt!

Patrick McNeil has pioneering blood. The vinous sleuth who introduced a red blend so popular we’re not allowed to name it here (think “jail” or “captive” and you’re getting close…), he’s been crafting some of California’s most sought-after reds for over a decade.

Today, we’re thrilled to share a second allocation of Patrick’s latest blockbuster: the no-holds-barred Paydirt Land of Riches Reserve, a deep and concentrated red sourced from the same vineyards behind icons including Ridge and Turley… which means it’s cut from the same cloth as some of the most legendary bottles in California.

If recent history is any guide, this 2018 Paydirt Land of Riches red won’t last long.

One of the main sources in this powerful blend, the Paper Street Vineyard in Paso Robles, is one of the most in-demand young vineyards in the state. Planted and farmed by the Dusi family (who’ve grown the Dusi Zinfandel for Ridge and Turley for decades), the up-and-coming star site supplies the family’s own wines and has also been tapped by Austin Hope, McPrice Myers, and Zinfandel legend Larry Turley.

Deep, concentrated, and generous from the get-go, Land of Riches bursts from the glass with steeped bramble and wild blackberry preserves. The mouthfeel features endless layers of red and black fruit, harmoniously balanced with spice and gentle tannins. This is incredible California heritage richness, priced like the most revered blends were 20 years ago.

In Land of Riches, the grapes from Dusi are complemented by Zinfandel precursor grape Primitivo, which comes from Lewis Ranches in Lodi, and by Cabernet Sauvignon from 180-year-old Pacheco Ranch. That historic site is one of the oldest California sites continuously farmed by one family, and is now tended by the seventh-generation farmer Herb Rowland.

Once the flawless fruit is sorted and de-stemmed, Patrick and Duckhorn-alum winemaker Kent Jarman ferment the wine in open-top stainless steel tanks, before aging it in neutral French oak barrels for a full year. The result is a wine that explodes with bravado, and will weaken the knees of California red-blend purists.
