We’ve told the story of our first taste of Poggio del Moro a hundred times. It was a magical, candle-lit night in Florence’s cobblestoned Centro Storico, and the protagonist was a mustachioed, impeccably dressed older gentleman known for collecting three things: Savile Row suits, Alfa Romeo cars, and Tuscan wines.

That our big revelation wasn’t a bottle of aged Solaia or an impeccable Masseto is a testament to the outrageous quality that Poggio del Moro offers for the price. Sure, it wasn’t as profound as those $300+ heavy hitters. But at less than 10% of the price, we knew an extremely positive outlier when we tasted it—and rushed to secure an allocation.

How does a winery produce a wine of this quality for this kind of price? Well, the quality part is easy to see: They’re forward-thinking, with an attention to detail that rivals some of the highest-dollar estates in the region. But the price part? Honestly, we have no idea.

They even have cultivated their own yeast strain from the wild microflora that live on the skins of their grapes.
