Rising Star from California’s Most Gifted Winemaking Dynasty
Philip Holbrook was destined to become a great winemaker.
As the assistant winemaker at Nickel & Nickel, he has a hand in some of Napa Valley’s most impeccable single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons. And as the grandson of Margrit Mondavi, he grew up absorbing wine culture in the greater Mondavi clan. He even honed his craft at both Robert Mondavi Winery and with Carlo and Dante Mondavi at RAEN.
Philip’s 2018 Revik Cabernet Sauvignon Saphi Vineyard is a phenomenal wine—and his personal project. A dark, rich, voluminous Cabernet grown on a plot of vines that he planted himself, it comes from a 2018 Napa vintage Wine Spectator scored a best-ever 99 points. This is only the winery’s second vintage, and the Saphi Vineyard Cabernet has already been featured at restaurants like State Bird Provisions and the MICHELIN three-starred Quince.
Revik is the embodiment of an upbringing steeped in winemaking acumen. Philip is a man who grew up with wine in his veins, and this Cabernet Sauvignon is a testament to his passion and dedication.
Saphi Vineyard is named after Philip's sister, Sasha, and himself. He grew up in Coombsville, and a decade ago he planted this plot with Cabernet Sauvignon clone 337. He dry-farms the vineyard, and his commitment to organic farming and meticulous selection is evident in every drop of this Cabernet. The winery's first vintage was 2016, and Philip opted not to release any 2017 because it wasn’t up to his standard. This speaks volumes about his commitment to making only great wine.
