California Pinot Legend in Perfect Vintage

Adam Lee is one of the great success stories in California wine, and a legend among Sonoma Pinot producers. He started Siduri in 1994 with his wife—bootstrapped, no estate vineyards, out of a warehouse—at a time when all those things were eyebrow-raising in the wine world.

He was heavily influenced by Burt Williams and Ed Selyem—of Williams Selyem, of course—and Adam really knew how to make full-bodied, seductively textured Pinot. By his second vintage he’d already attracted the rapturous praise of Robert Parker, who anointed Siduri a Next Hot Thing by declaring “I am immensely impressed with the Pinot Noirs being fashioned by this small artisanal producer.”

Demand for Siduri has been smoking ever since—and Adam has over-delivered with every bottle he’s made. So with access to the Barbieri Vineyard, in the near-perfect 2018 vintage, there was no way he was gonna miss.

Barbieri is a prime Russian River site right on Olivet Road in the heart of Russian River Valley. Olivet is prized for its gravelly, clay-loam soils and cool climate—it was one of the earliest areas of the AVA planted to Pinot, and it’s attracted icons like Merry Edwards and Williams Selyem for the black-cherry and red-plum fruited Pinot with signature cola and exotic spice accents.

2018 will go down as a legendary vintage for Sonoma Pinot producers. Vinous thinks it’s the greatest-ever year for the region, and praised the “spectacular vintage” whose wines are “incredibly expressive of site.” It was a long, moderate growing season, giving Adam and his team full control over when to pick and delivering the rich, seductive flavors he’d built a reputation on.
