Burgundy’s Latest Rival: Central Otago
Old World structure. New World fruit. Otherworldly value. This is what sets the 2018 Sineann Pisa Vineyard Pinot Noir apart from so many of its peers, and it perfectly showcases why New Zealand should be on the radar of value-driven Burgundy and Sonoma aficionados.
This bottle is the best of both worlds, and it’s as bold a statement as we’ve tasted for why New Zealand is a must-know terroir for red wine lovers.
New Zealand’s tempestuous Central Otago region is a land of extremes, where summer highs flirt with 90 degrees before icy evening winds whip down the majestic mountains ringing the area, often dropping the mercury below 50 degrees—allowing the grapes to achieve the delicate balance that makes top Pinot a heart-pounding wine that collectors, winemakers, and novices can agree on.
Crafted from a single vineyard in Central Otago, the 2018 Sineann Pinot Noir is a blend of several clones which lends the wine its multifaceted complexity and fusion of New and Old World elements. A 17-acre, certified organic site, the wine exudes transparency and terroir, accented by a light winemaking touch from Willamette veteran Peter Rosback.
Peter is a Pinot Noir expert who’s traveled the world, and specifically New Zealand, looking for sites that give the ultimate expression of the Heartbreak Grape. In Sineann, he believes he’s found the ideal spot for Pinot Noir thanks to the vineyard’s unique microclimate that lends a balance of richness and restraint to the small berries grown here. In 2018, the result is spectacular.
