    The Kid Calls, We Answer

    “Can’t it wait?”

That was our text to The Kid, who’d managed to ping us just a few minutes after the Lakers-Warriors tip. Based on his rangy frame and a few conversations we’d had with him, we were positive he was a big hoops guy—but his timing, texting us in the first quarter of a huge playoff game, made us wonder. Either way, couldn’t whatever it was wait a few hours?

    “Nope.”

The source of two of our hottest deals of 2023, The Kid has more than proven himself, so we knew better than to sleep on anything he had going on. We hopped into the car and cruised down to Cadet in downtown Napa, where we found him alone on the patio, sipping a Rochefort. Across the table from his beer were two polished wine glasses and a freshly uncorked bottle of the 2018 Sosie.

“Krupp’s Stagecoach Cab goes for over $200, as you know,” he said as he started pouring. “Alpha O’s is $180, and Hobbs’ is $160. This is $90—or should be.”

We dove straight into the deep and concentrated dark-ruby wine. Showing tons of dark fruit, cedar, anise, espresso, and violets, it’s the platonic ideal of a Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc blend. The palate is packed with flavor and concentration, all riding on the generous mountain tannins typify great wines from Atlas Peak and Stagecoach.

In the absolutely crushing 2018 season—rated 99 points for quality by Wine Spectator—the Sosie team made just 18 barrels of this wine, aging it for 21 months in 50% new French oak.

This is a wine that shows off Stagecoach’s revered terroir AND a 99pt vintage. Enjoy!
