A Powerhouse with Wings
There’s nothing quite like the black-fruited rumble of Petite Sirah from Lake County’s rugged Red Hills. In the hands of a master like Bob Pepi, the grape’s full-throttle, wild-berry intensity can challenge Napa Cabs and Zins at twice the price.
Our first offering of Pepi’s midnight-hued blockbuster was an eye-opener for many. As one member wrote, “I am not a Petite Sirah drinker BUT the Two Angels is high on my list. After decanting and letting it open a short while, it is beautiful. Like to buy another case.”
It’s taken us almost two years to procure another lot of this small-production gem, but today we’re proud to present the 2018 Two Angels Petite Sirah. This wine does what many $40 wines wish they could, combining power and complexity with the silkiness of the most crowd-pleasing reds.
Crafting a powerhouse with wings is no easy task, but if anyone is up for it, it’s Pepi. At heart, he’s a master Cabernet maker, responsible for multiple Wine Spectator Top 100 wines and the top-selling Wine Access Cabernet of all time, Whitehall Lane. Pepi’s golden touch, usually reserved for pricey bottles, is on full display in the masterful balance, deeply focused dark fruit, and seamlessly integrated oak of the 2018 Two Angels.
Intent to produce a wine that would match his award-winning Cabernets in quality but not price, Pepi followed grape-growing heavyweights like the Beckstoffers—owners of what is arguably the greatest vineyard portfolio in the New World—north from Napa to Lake County and Red Hills. Here, sunny skies, cool nights, and red-tinted volcanic soils produce Petite Sirah of staggering depth and extraordinary vibrancy. Without a Napa zip code—the 90210 of grape-growing—Red Hills can deliver unparalleled value.
The 2018 Two Angels Petite Sirah was hand-harvested and hit with a percentage of new French oak. The result is more than generous, offering piles of blackberry and blueberry jam layered with mint and cocoa, and garnished with fresh violet.
