Mineral, Bright, Under-the Radar: A Des Special

We might as well call this a “Des special.” A Master Sommelier friend and Wine Access partner whose palate is especially attuned to classically styled wines that over-deliver, he’s introduced us to a trove of member-favorite bottles over the last five years—and Bossert’s electric Pinot Blanc is certain to be added to that list.

It’s a bright, snappy white with beautifully pure fruit and mineral energy; one of the finest Pinot Blancs we’ve tasted—at any price. This is a testament to how much of a hidden gem Bossert is—despite growing grapes for over 150 years, they’ve only made their own wine for 15.

When Des dropped off a bundle of samples, we knew there had to be a few winners in the mix—and as soon as we tasted the Bossert’s labor of love, we knew it was a standout.

Five years from now, we’re going to have to fight for every bottle of Philipp and Johanna Bossert’s wines. The youngest generation in a family that’s been growing grapes since 1848, they’ve taken it upon themselves to make a name in the wine world—and their relentless focus on quality, combined with prime vineyard holdings, means it's only a matter of time before their wines are MICHELIN-starred restaurant mainstays.

The Bosserts farm organically using sheep to control grasses and weeds, to make sure their soils are as alive as possible, and their wines follow suit. Fermentation and aging take place in stainless steel to preserve bright fruit flavors and minerality, and the wine ages for nine months on the lees to round out its texture to perfection. The result is a standout wine that’ll bring joy to lovers of crisp whites everywhere.
