Hard-to-Find, Top-Value Shiraz is Back
Demand for Yering Station's powerhouse Shiraz-Viognier is exceptionally high from the winery’s rabid domestic fanbase, so it rarely makes it to the US market.
But we were persistent. We loved this wine from the second we stuck our noses in the glass. It enthralled us with its muscular, dark fruit, layered flavors, and cellarworthiness.
More importantly, Wine Access members loved the last vintage, so we did what we do best: convince wineries to give up the goods. Cajoling ensued. Eventually, we got what we (and you) needed: a small allocation for Wine Access members.
This 2018 is pure and captivating, boasting a muscular personality and rich, dark-fruit flavors, with the Côte-Rôtie-inspired co-fermentation providing exceptional polish and grace. Add aromatics of blackberry, cracked pepper, a touch of mint, and just the right amount of new oak, and you’ve got a wine that can hang with the best of Ampuis or California. As Wine Companion put it in their 95-point rave, it’s got “everything in harmony.”
Yering Station is the original winery in the cool-climate Victoria region, and their Shiraz-Viognier is a sensation: It’s often sold out in Australia, and since the winery is just an hour away from downtown Melbourne, there’s intense demand from the area’s enthusiastic collectors and top restaurants.
We’ve been in Yering Station’s corner for years (we got to know former winemaker Willy Lund in his Oregon days). Our access and enthusiasm have whipped up a devoted fan base among Wine Access members who've recognized Yering’s Shiraz-Viognier as a top-notch bottle at an outrageously low price.
That longtime enthusiasm has paid off. You owe it to yourself to reap the rewards.
