We’d rearrange our schedule any day to taste just one of our friend and 100-point winemaker Russell Bevan’s Cabernets—so when we got that text from Russell himself, we dropped everything and headed to his spacious cellar.
Today, our decade-long relationship with Russell results in a true never-again opportunity: the chance to get in on the inaugural release of the Adversity Cellars Erba Cabernet Sauvignon.
Coming from the rugged Erba Vineyard in the windswept Atlas Peak AVA, this wine displays all the power and tenacity that you’d expect from one grown in such harsh conditions. The fruit is brooding: Dark berries laced with minerals and crushed red rocks, accented by cinnamon, clove, and sanguine flavors carry from the nose to the finish. A touch of Petit Verdot adds an extra layer of ferrous intrigue that perfectly complements the mountain Cabernet, which has the structure for long life, but whose power is matched by Bevan’s signature silky texture and supple tannins.
