CVNE Elegance Meets Ribera Brawn

For 138 years, the legendary 100-point estate CVNE has been synonymous with Rioja. Famous for their elegant expressions of Tempranillo, they were the first Spanish winery to land the #1 spot on Wine Spectator’s Top 100.

When the historic house announced that it would be acquiring vineyards in Ribera del Duero, Spanish-wine watchers wondered: Could they replicate their success on the rugged plateau to the southwest?

The 2019 Arano Moradillo de Roa Crianza, celebrated to the tune of 95 points, answers that question with a resounding YES. “Seductively spicy,” raved James Suckling, who also called it “Rich and delicious.”

Arano—CVNE’s label for wines off their high-altitude vineyards in the Moradillo de Roa area of Ribera del Duero—has racked up an impressive 4.2-star rating from our members, and the 2019 shows off the acidity, freshness, and energy of an appellation that boasts some of the highest vineyards in Europe. The house’s trademark touch turns the region’s brawn into lean, sleek muscle, complemented with dark-fruit concentration and a complex interplay of violets, lavender, and citrus tones.

The 2019 Arano Moradillo do Roa bridges the two main Spanish schools of Tempranillo with exquisite grace. Drawn off five plots, it’s aged in barrel for 15 months, achieving a perfect balance of oak and fruit, setting it up for an extended cellar rest as well as immediate, plush drinkability.

While CVNE is associated with Rioja, it has always seen itself as an ambassador of Spain at large. This wine backs that up, capturing different sides of Tempranillo’s soul at a riveting bargain price.
