When Top Pinot Vineyards Combine Forces

Winemaker Dean De Korth honed his winemaking skill on Pinot Noir’s most hallowed ground, training at Burgundy legends like Leflaive, Lafon, and Morey. When he returned to the US, he set out to replicate Burgundian complexity and balance in California—and one sip of the 2019 Bernardus Santa Lucia Highlands shows he’s accomplished his mission.

The Santa Lucia Highlands appellation gives him ideal terroir to draw Old World finesse from bold, lush, New World fruit. These verdant hills in Monterey County get enough sun and warmth to bring forth luxurious succulence, while elevation and cool Pacific breezes nurture a refreshing acidity.

This wine’s primary source, the famed Tondré Grapefield, occupies a prime spot in the region, just across a dry creek bed from the renowned Soberanes and Garys’ Vineyards. Here, strong marine influences and well-drained gravelly loam help produce Pinot Noir with deep flavor and enticing vibrancy.

De Korth bolstered Tondré’s grapes with ones from a who’s who of Santa Lucia Highlands sources, including Ingrid’s, Rosella’s, Soberanes, and Sierra Mar—sites he regularly taps for his luxe, $70+ single-vineyard bottles.

The wine gained depth and polish from an eight-month rest in a mix of used French oak vessels—neutral barrels and 30-year-old tanks—so nothing could interfere with the intricate fragrance and crystalline red fruit. Every swirl of this wine releases an array of cherry, black tea, smoke, and black-truffle aromas, drawing you into a palate dense with red fruit and cola detailed with bitter cocoa and sea salt.

Bernardus has ascended to California powerhouse status on the prestige of wines like this one, a seamless bottle that shows the touch of a Pinot Noir master.
