From Pritchard Hill’s True Pioneers
We could barely believe it ourselves: For all the ink we’ve given Phil Titus—the 100-point winemaker behind Wine Access favorites Coho and Titus—and the incredible wines he’s made at Chappellet, last year’s offer of the Mountain Cuvée was our first ever from the iconic Pritchard Hill winery.
It was a sellout as massive as the place Chappellet holds in Napa Valley. What came back to us almost immediately were dozens of five-star reviews from our members—and even more emails asking when we’re getting the Mountain Cuvée back.
Chappellet’s 2019 Mountain Cuvée is a Bordeaux-style blend that, from the first swirl of the glass, delivers everything we expect from Phil and the winery he helped put on the map.
Sourced from Chappellet’s Pritchard Hill estate and select Napa Valley sites, it’s lush and concentrated, with supple tannins that beg for early drinking. Our tiny allocation comes with perfect provenance straight from the Chappellet cellars, and it will disappear fast.
Last year, we felt the occasion of our first Chappellet offer merited a visit to the site that started it all. So we headed up Silverado Trail, turning east on Highway 128 and struggling to keep our eyes on the road as Lake Hennessey shimmered below.
It might be known for some of the most priceless wines produced in Napa Valley—Colgin, Continuum, and Ovid all sit on these soils—but Pritchard Hill wasn’t always a foregone conclusion. It was a huge leap of faith when Donn and Molly Chappellet purchased the estate in the 1960s. Of course, it didn’t hurt that the gambit had the approval of Napa Valley godfather André Tchelistcheff.
Turns out it was a wise move, and the list of talent that has called Chappellet home is a testament to the singular terroir: Philip Togni, Tony Soter, Cathy Corison, and Helen Turley have all played roles there. Phil Titus joined in 1981 and took over as winemaker in 1990. He has guided the estate to two 100-point wines and a profusion of 96+ point scores. In other words, the kind of scores that make a career, Phil and Chappellet make a regular occurrence.
Phil Titus’s acumen and Chappellet’s outstanding terroir and quality—it’s all overflowing from this 2019 Mountain Cuvée, which is the embodiment of top Napa Valley pedigree for a reasonable price. We’re just as thrilled as we were about our first offer, and we don’t expect this one to last any longer than that one did.
