A Rare Cab Franc Cuvée from an “Outstanding” Vintage
With seven châteaux between them on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, Alain Aubert and his wife Bernadette have their hands full. Luckily, their daughters Cécile, Amélie, and Héloïse are on hand to help them with winemaking, viticulture, and marketing to keep this little winemaking empire running.
Located on a limestone plateau at a graceful bend in the Dordogne river, about a half-hour east of Saint-Emilion, Château Ribebon is a 198-acre property. Its 18th century château was once frequented by King Louis XVI of France on hunting expeditions, but today the estate is best known for its top wine: a Merlot-dominant blend produced from 40-year old vines.
This bottle is an outlier—a cuvée the Auberts devised with the help of their US importer and close friend, Serge Doré. It’s a selection of their Cabernet Franc, which typically makes up only 10% of their Grand Vin. In 2019—a Right Bank vintage Wine Advocate rated 95 and called “Outstanding”—the grape ripened perfectly, and the finished wine is full of beautiful red fruit and floral aromas that will continue to evolve through 2030.
