Bordeaux Can Still Surprise Us

Current conventional wisdom says the best Bordeaux deals lie in the hinterlands, wearing the labels of long-overlooked appellations.

The 2019 Château Sérilhan Saint-Estèphe says that’s wrong.

Grown in the prestigious and high-demand AOC of Saint-Estèphe—home to Grand Cru Classé chateaux Cos d’Estournel, Montrose, and Calon-Ségur, among others—the 2018 Château Sérilhan brings everything you want in a bottle from the heart of the Médoc. It’s got power. It’s got class. And with 92-94 points from Vinous, 92-93 from Suckling, 91-93 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, and 92 from Decanter, it’s even got critical consensus.

The only thing it doesn’t have is a high price.

Sérilhan has long been known for great value—in fact, Vinous recently did a retrospective tasting of a decade’s worth of wines. The title of the article was “Choose Wisely,” and in it they declared that “Sérilhan…has consistently furnished Bordeaux lovers with superb wines,” and called the wine “a pertinent reminder that you do not have to remortgage the house in order to enjoy top-class Claret.”

In 2019, they brought legendary consultant Dr. Alain Raynaud on board—he works with 100-point Napa icon Colgin—which just solidifies their status as one of the best Cru Bourgeois Supérieur bottles on the market.

2018 was the first year Château Sérilhan began operating in its new classification as Cru Bourgeois Supérieur, and proprietor Didier Marcelis (soon helped by Dr. Raynaud) proved the estate’s mettle right away. He’d taken over his family’s estate and enacted sweeping changes aimed at lifting the winery to the peak of its category. Manual harvesting, hard pruning to limit yields, and a renovated cellar have transformed it into one of the most talked-about and lauded projects in Saint-Estèphe.
