High, Low, and In Between: Pinot for Anytime
Sometimes finding top value in Burgundy takes a challenging hunt—but sometimes we find the best deals right where we think they’ll be.
Our members have loved the wines of Chanson for nearly a decade, selling out current releases and rare back vintages alike because they all overdeliver—uncommon in a region known for hefty prices.
Their 2019 Bourgogne is one of the Pinot deals of the season, confirmed by dual 90-point scores that praise the wine’s balance and deliciousness. It’s an ideal red to have lying in wait for a Tuesday night when your friends happen to drop by, or a Saturday after you’ve spent the entire afternoon painstakingly recreating Julia Child’s coq au vin.
Founded in 1750, Chanson is one of Burgundy’s oldest estates. They own 111 acres of vines scattered across the region, which allows them to access the best grapes in any season—and to deliver value that younger producers can’t match.
The historic Domaine Chanson cellar, where this 2019 was aged, is actually a medieval tower that dates back to the time when King Louis XI was defending his claim in Beaune. The stone walls of the tower are 26 feet thick, making them basically impenetrable—and a nice, cool place to store immaculate Pinot.
The 2019 was made using 100% whole-cluster fermentation, with the stems on the grape bunches providing structure and a touch of bay, spice, and forest-floor character that perfectly complements the beautiful red-berry aromas that dominate the nose. On the palate, there’s a liveliness that’s mouthwatering and a silky elegance that reminds you this is Pinot Noir from its homeland.
