After Kosta Browne, This Was Next

David Hejl was CEO of Kosta Browne as it went white-hot, taking a small brand and building its reputation and reach into major-player status. So when he left to start his own project in 2015, the wine world took note.

And what he’s done since with his own Domaine Della has more than lived up to its promise.

It starts with the vineyards that Della works with: names like Richie, Soberanes, and Terra de Promissio. These are some of the greatest sites on the Sonoma Coast, and they make up the backbone of today’s 2019. Terra de Promissio has shot to fame thanks to Williams-Selyem, who make a single-vineyard bottling from the star Petaluma site. They were attracted to it for the same reasons that put the vineyard on Hajl’s radar.

The vines are planted in close proximity to the Petaluma Gap—the most coveted area in Sonoma Pinot over the last half-decade—which blasts cool air every evening and tempers the warm climate of the region. That leaves winemakers with a choice: They can pick normally and get wines with raging acidity, or let the grapes hang out late in the season to garner some extra ripeness.

Domaine Della opts for the latter, knowing that Terra de Promissio’s climate will result in a powerful yet balanced bottle showing bold fruit, textures of pure silk, and take-another-sip vibrancy. The 2019 was polished by a 15-month stay in 50% new French oak—again, attesting to David’s eye for the all-important finishing touches.
