“Ah, these vintages that end in 9…”

Historic in quality, tiny in quantity.

That's the story of Burgundy's phenomenal 2019 vintage, which produced what we see as the holy grail: bottles that boast Grand Cru quality but not Grand Cru prices.

That’s why we have to move quickly in historic vintages like this. Exploding demand means that we have to get in before the market does to snare the hidden stars of the vintage.

That’s exactly what Domaine Georges Chicotot’s Les Rues de Chaux Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru is. Its hillside vines delivered perfectly ripe, Grand-Cru-quality fruit in 2019—and in this feeding frenzy of a vintage, this wine is destined to vanish into savvy collectors’ cellars. We captured just 10 cases for Wine Access members.

“Ah, these vintages that end in 9…”

Burgundy lovers will immediately know what Pascale Chicotot is talking about: 1929, ‘49, ‘59, ‘69, ‘89, ‘99, ‘09—and now 2019—are all outstanding vintages in Burgundy.

Domaine Georges Chicotot is the home base for winemaker Pascale Chicotot and her son Clément. Certified organic in the vineyard and exercising only minimal intervention in the cellar, Chicotot ages all their wines at least 24 months, six of which are in the bottle. This approach makes for soft, approachable wines that develop beautifully over time.

Pascale made the 2019 from a blend of 75- and 34-year-old vineyards in Les Rues de Chaux, a 5.25-acre, highly sloped Premier Cru that is close to the southern reaches of the village itself. The vines struggle to take root on the rocky plateau but ultimately produce densely concentrated fruit.

In the warmth of the 2019 vintage, this led to Grand Cru–like depth with the stuffing to age gracefully over the next 15 years.
